If you plan to travel to Japan soon and you’re not among the faint of heart, you might want to visit the Fuji-Q Highland, an amusement park that just added a very special new attraction: the world’s steepest roller coaster. The so-called Takabisha accelerates to 100 km/h, has a 43m drop and a 121-degree freefall.

The Japanese roller coaster beat the former record holder, the Le Timber Drop in France, which measures “just” 113.1 degrees.

Fuji Q Highland invested $37 million in the development of the Takabisha. One ride takes 112 seconds and costs $12.50.

Amazing Gigantic Jaguar E-Type Sculpture

You can usually spot Gerry Judah's car sculptures from a mile away, not only because they are so distinctly different, but also because they are gigantic in scale and size.

Judah's latest creation is a 91 ft (28 m) high steel sculpture of the Jaguar E-Type car, designed for the Goodwood Festival of Speed which took place in Sussex, UK last weekend. Jaguar was asked to provide a sculpture to commemorate the 50th birthday of the classic sports car.

The impressive piece is made from .62 miles (.5 km) of 4 ft (1200mm) diameter steel tubing. Balancing on its front bumper, the giant Jaguar weighs a massive 193 tons (386,000 lbs), the equivalent of 135 E-types.

“I thought I would like to express the form of the car itself without any embellishments," explains Judah. “Everyone recognizes the E-type, the shape speaks for itself. You can’t compete with it, you can’t digress from it.”

This cheeky gecko certainly has things licked as it gets the morning dew off its eyes.

The web-footed creature is a rare reptile found on coastal sand dunes in Namibia between the sea and the desert.

The nocturnal geckos collect water on their eyeballs in the early morning when a mist bank descends as cool coastal air hits the warmth of the desert.

Then they lick it off to have a drink.

It took photographer Isak Pretorius three days to get the licking picture, following gecko tracks across the dunes through the mist.

The 32-year-old South African said: ‘In these coastal dunes, the warm desert air meets the cold air of the Atlantic ocean, creating a dense layer of mist almost every morning until about 9am.

‘This layer of mist only stretches about three miles inland and creates a very unique environment.

‘Their most fascinating characteristic is the way in which they gather moisture from licking droplets of water off their beautiful big eyeballs.

‘In the mornings they would stand still on the dunes in the misty weather, waiting for the mist to form water droplets on their eyeballs.

‘They would then very elegantly lick the droplets off their eyeballs in five or six repeated strokes.’

Mr Pretorius, a consultant engineer, added: ‘The way to find these geckos is to find the tracks and follow them.

‘The tracks are very small and we had to drive very slowly, inspecting each square metre of dune very carefully.

‘On the third and final morning our patience finally paid off when we found two geckos that both entertained us with some eyeball-licking behaviour.

‘Seeing them for the first time in real life I was amazed how small they actually are. Probably only 4in to 6in long in total.

‘Their skin is beautiful shades of pink and very transparent which would offer no resistance to any harsh sunlight.

‘We learnt that as long as we approach them very slowly, especially when stalking them from a distance, they would not run away from us.

‘It would seem that fast moving figures from a distance away somehow make them more nervous than when these figure are right up close to them.

‘We were sad to leave, but felt privileged to have seen a private show of one of the world's natural wonders.’

At this place are also those who arrived on a second place, those who weren't so lucky, those who made wrong choices or those who knew few things about the way to bring fame to themselves. But all those people who aren't registered by the books certainly contributed with their personal efforts, many times a decisive factor, and made the pages of History be turned successfully. That's the History of Aviation, a dangerous and fascinating adventure where Santos Dumont or The Wright Brothers weren't the only people to obtain the credits.
The famous Wright Brothers' fight happened only at the beginning of the 20th century; however, let's go back to a hundred years before the starting point of the modern aviation. The Englishman John Stringfellow, for example, was a truly pioneer. In 1848, he flew through a little distance with an engine heavier than air, conceived and constructed by himself and by another inventor, William Samuel Henson. They named their invention Aerial Steam Carriage, as it was moved by a steam machine. It already had most of the modern airplane characteristics, like propellers, fuselage, undercarriage and control through directional rudder; nevertheless, it had a great difficulty on lifting up to the air. No success.
Some years later, in 1856, Jean-Marie Le Bris chose an energy source more conventional to uplift his engine: instead of horsepower, he chose... a horse. That's right. The animal pulled, by gallop, the "Albatross" -- that was the name of his invention -- as if it was a paper parrot. It was an effort in vain. Le Bris gambled on the wrong horse and had no success. Obviously.
The idea of imitating birds remained and kept most of the inventors designing gliders. That's what happened with William Paul Butusov, the creator of another "Albatross", which should uplift from a rail. The failure of this trial only showed the inutility of these kinds of engines and reinforced the need for motor machines.
The American Hiram Maxim was one of those who were convicted of it. He focused on lightness and designed a huge engine inspired on a paper parrot which had two potent steam motors. Mounted on a rail, it flew only 500 meters and that's the end of the experience. However, Maxim showed that it was possible to uplift a heavy engine if an enough powerful motor was available. We were in 1894.
Horatio Phillips was very important, as he was the first one to practice aerodynamic theories that still make our airplanes fly: the pressure difference between the inferior and the superior surface of a wing. After two more-or-less succeeding trials, he designed an "airplane" with 20 little wings and a propeller, which could uplift from the ground in 1904.
The multiple-wings-style seemed to be there to stay. In 1921, the Italian Gianni Caproni designed a fantastic seaplane for that time: nine wings and eight motors. The called it Transaero -- it flew once.
But the birds' admirers remained loyal to the gliders, like George White, who, in 1930, invented this bizarre and elegant passarola. We don't know if this engine had ever functioned even once.

Surgeon blasts the latest craze in body modification with corset piercing and ribbons

Forget tattoos, belly button piercings and Lady Gaga-style silicone implants - the latest craze in body modification is 'corset piercing' where metal rings are pierced into the skin and joined together with a ribbon to give a corset effect.

The 'decoration', which can cost up to £300, can be applied to any area of the body where the skin is loose enough to pinch in order to thread a needle through. Popular areas include the back, ribs and, in some cases, even the throat.

But a cosmetic surgeon has now warned of the dangers of the bizarre trend which is sweeping the UK, saying the scarring following the procedure can be 'absolutely horrendous'.
Some have endured an hour of pain to achieve the corset effect but it's only temporary - after a few weeks of wear they simply grow out, leaving scars in their place.

It appears to be the latest in the 'body modification' phenomenon, which has seen people going to extraordinary levels in a bid to stand out from the crowd.
Today it's possible to be branded, scarred and even have silicone implanted under the skin to create bumps and 'horns'.

Eccentric popstar Lady Gaga is just one celebrity who's jumped on the bandwagon. She sported bizarre flesh-coloured 'horns' on her face during a television interview in February this year.

According to piercing experts, the 'corset' modification is growing in popularity as more and more brave the pain.
But consultant plastic surgeon Kevin Hancock, a council member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons who works at Spire Murrayfield Hospital, Merseyside, warned of the problems it can cause.

He said: 'I can't believe it's something that people would be attracted to.

'Any piercing, superficial or otherwise, produces a scar and different people scar in different ways.

'For some, the scarring may be slight but for others it can produce problems where the tissue overgrows and you end up with a red lump which is permanent.

'In some cases this can be absolutely horrendous.

'I have to say it seems absolutely barking to me. I was amazed when I saw pictures of this piercing - it would be extremely painful and it's only temporary.

'This is a row of rings which could also bleed and become infected. There is a risk of the rings pulling the skin and also becoming caught on something.
'I can't believe that people are going out with these things on display - they're open to any sort of infection. It's verging on masochistic.

'It's just bizarre. I saw a picture of a girl who had the front of her chest done like this, that area is very prone to scarring. It's an awful thing to do.'

Laura Hunt offers corset piercing at her Tattoo and Piercing Studio, called Dragstrip, in Southampton, Hampshire, and charges £5 per hoop.

The 25-year-old, from Southampton, who has had the piercing herself, insisted it wasn't dangerous.
She explained: 'Corset piercing is becoming more popular. Body modifications have recently become really popular as everyone wants to be different.

'It can be quite painful. It involves pinching the skin and pushing the needle through by hand.

'A lot of people know about it and would like to have it done but for some it can be too painful.

'It's not dangerous because it's a surface piercing and doesn't go deep enough.

'It's an open wound so it has to be cleaned to prevent infection - it's just like any other piercing.

'It only lasts for three to four weeks and after that it will just grow out. It does leave a few red scars.

'We get a lot of different people asking to have it done - one was a 45-year-old mum who wanted it done for a tattoo convention.

'We've also had a couple of students doing art degrees and others who are in to fetishes and pain. Others have it done because they want to look nice for a particular occasion.'

With a 13-inch tail, Chandre Oram, a tea-estate worker, has become quite an object of devotion in his native Alipurduar, West Bengal and believes that Hanuman is manifest in him. "I was born on Ram Navami (birthday of Lord Ram). People have a lot of faith in me - they get cured of severe ailments when they touch my tail. I believe I can do a lot of good to those who come to me with devotion," says the man, before whom thousands of people queue up each day to seek blessings. In a corner of the courtyard of his home, Oram has set up a small Hanuman temple, where he receives offerings on Ram Navami, which he later offers to the deity.

However, because of the tail, Oram has found it difficult to get a bride. "Almost 20 women have turned down marriage proposals. They see me and agree to a match. But as soon as I turn around, they see my tail and leave. But I have decided I will marry the woman who accepts me and my tail. Or else, I'll remain a bachelor like Hanuman," he said.

Oram's family is proud of his tail and has turned down offers from doctors for its removal by surgery. "He will not survive without his tail. It has become part of his being, his existence," said Rekha, his sister. Doctors say that true tails are rare. But they are located in the coccygeal end of the vertebral column whereas Oram's tail shoots out from the lumbar region. "The coccyx is a vestige in humans and we stopped growing tails from that region a long time ago when we evolved from monkeys. Oram's case seems an aberration, an offshoot of a congenital defect," said eminent surgeon Dr B Ramana. The medical community reads the monkey man's case as a spina bifida -- a defect in the bone of the spine covered by a hole with lots of hair covering it.

The bizarre paper describing the case reads: "A 22-year-old woman sought medical care for a lesion in the plantar region of her left foot, a well-formed nipple surrounded by areola and hair. Microscopic examination of the dermis showed hair follicles, eccrine glands, and sebaceous glands. Fat tissue was noted at the base of the lesion. Clinical and histopathologic findings were consistent with the diagnosis of supernumerary breast tissue, also known as pseudomamma. To our knowledge, this is the first report of supernumerary breast tissue on the foot."
World's Largest Hand (Lui Hua - China)
Lui Hua suffers from a rare condition known as macrodactyly. When he was hospitalized in Shanghai on July 2007, his left thumb measured 10.2 inches and his index finger measured close to 12. On July 20 surgeons undertook a seven-hour operation to reduce the size of Liu's fingers and thumb. Doctors removed 11 pounds of flesh and bone in the procedure. A second surgery is scheduled to take place. Enlarged limbs can be caused by a number of medical conditions. Lymphedema is perhaps the most common cause and results in some extraordinarily enlarged limbs.
Frog-like Baby (unidentified baby - Nepal)
On 2006, this bizarre-looking baby was born in Charikot, the headquarters of Dolakha district, attracting a huge number of onlookers to witness the astonishing sight.

The neck-less baby with its head almost totally sunk into the upper part of the body and with extraordinarily large eyeballs literally popping out of the eye-sockets, was born to Nir Bahadur Karki and Suntali Karki at the Gaurishnkar Hospital in Charikot. The Karki couple is a permanent resident of Dolakha's Bhirkot VDC.

The bizarre baby, however, died after half an hour of its birth, Suntali, the mother, informed. It was taken to the hospital after its death. The news about such a baby being brought to the hospital spread like wildfire and there were hundreds gathered at the hospital to have a look. The police had to be deployed to control the crowd.

The baby weighed 2kg at birth and was born after the normal nine-month gestation period. Suntali, already a mother of two normal daughters, was not suffering from any illness during the pregnancy. Nir Bahadur, the father, says he does not feel any remorse for the newly-born baby's death. "I am happy that nothing happened to my wife," he said.

Feet facing backwards (Wang Fang - China)
Wang Fang, 27, of Chongqing city in China, was born with her feet facing the wrong way. She has learned to live with her condition without problems and recently refused a disability pension by being classified as disabled. "I can run faster than most of my friends and have a regular job as a waitress in the family restaurant. There is no reason to class me as disabled."

Cyclop Baby (unidentified baby - India)
On 2006, this baby was born with a only one eye in India. Medical staff who helped deliver the child believe that the child's condition was caused by an experimental anti-cancer drug. Another cause written in the report by the hospital was that it could also be the result of a chromosomal disorder. The child was diagnosed with a rare chromosomal disorder, known as cyclopia. She was born with a single eye in the center of her forehead, no nose and her brain fused into a single hemisphere. With such severe deformities, it was a miracle that the girl survived even a few minutes after delivery. The baby died days later.
Baby with Three Arms (Liu Junjie - China)

This 2-month-old baby named Liu Junjie from Anhui Province, China, was born with a third arm on 2006. Doctors successfully removed the extremely rare and well-developed third arm, but the baby required long-term physical therapy to gain function in his remaining hand, which has no palm and flexes in either direction. "We're hoping to exchange information with doctors who've dealt with similar cases anywhere in the world," said Chen, head of the orthopedics department at Shanghai Children's Medical Center. "This is so rare that we have virtually no information to go on."

Paper car was created out of 750 unique parts. Each part was printed and assembled using reference photography and A7 blueprints.

Coral reefs are the largest and most unique underwater structures on planet Earth. These beautiful biological structures are made from calcium carbonate deposition secreted by hundreds of types of corals. Reef-building corals live in clear waters in tropical and sub-tropical parts of world.

According to the WWF: "Roughly one-quarter of coral reefs worldwide are already considered damaged beyond repair, with another two-thirds under serious threat." Not only are coral reefs facing danger from global warming, ocean pollution, overfishing, ocean acidification and various diseases, but the life in and around these reefs is also under threat.
Dead corals: The future of all corals if we keep on polluting and exploiting the seas

Even a slight environmental effect can harm the fragile ecosystems of coral reefs. Cyanide fishing, chemically enhanced pesticides, fertilizer runoff and shockwaves from blast fishing are other factors damaging coral ecosystems. Also, sewage water, if not treated properly, is very harmful for growth of algae, and this in turn damages coral reefs.

In fact, even though we might live thousands of miles away from coral reefs, harmful garbage and other runoff water ends up in watersheds which ultimately damage their ecosystems.
We must remember the fact that coral reefs depend upon their surrounding habitats. Also, these reefs are home to a huge variety of other organisms. The list includes worms, seabirds, sponges, echinoderms, crustaceans and even visiting dolphins. In fact, every inch of a coral reef is covered by some or other organisms.

The structure of coral reefs is directly related to changing water acidity. Increasing CO2 levels affect these reefs' ability to grow properly. Therefore reefs become less supportive for the organisms that depend on them.

Known as the "rainforests of the sea", coral reefs support the most diverse ocean ecosystems and therefore need our help and attention to survive properly.

In order to let them thrive properly, we might follow this guidance: "Be informed, do not pollute your surrounding and support coral conservation organizations."

Royal fan spends two months KNITTING a wedding cake for him and Kate

This wedding cake took two months of painstaking work to complete - and it is not even edible.

Royal fan Sheila Carter spent hours every day knitting the three-tiered creation in homage to Kate Middleton and Prince William's nuptials on April 29.

The 'cake' has taken more than 100,000 stitches and has around 300 hand sewn flowers adorning white woolly 'icing'.

Its three tiers are topped by the fabric version of Prince William and his fiance Kate Middleton.

Mrs Carter, a retired greengrocer, spent three hours each day creating and adding the final touches to the imitation confectionary.

The 74-year-old great grandmother, from Southampton, Hants, said the work had been a labour of love which took 400 hours.

She said: 'I've been doing it for about three hours a day. My husband's moaning that he hasn't had a cooked meal for weeks.

'I'm a huge fan of the Royal family, especially when Diana was around, and I think William and Kate make a lovely couple.

'I've knitted lots of cakes before for my granddaughters to play with and I just thought "I'm going to knit a wedding cake one day".

'When I started I hadn't really thought about who would be on top but then the engagement was announced I thought it would perfect for William and Kate.'

Three boxes were used as bases for the cake tiers, before being covered with white woolly 'icing' and each flower was individually knitted and sewn on.

Sheila said she has tried to make the couple on the cake as life-like as possible.

She added: "It's not based on a pattern, I just made it up.

'There must be about 300 flowers and that's what really took the time. I should think in each little flower there's probably a couple of hundred stitches.'

Mrs Carter has knitted everything from birthday cakes to a cauliflower for her seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild to play with.

This amazing full-size transparent sculpture of Lexus' new $375,000 LFA supercar was constructed by Scu Fujimoto, a noted Japanese architect. The sculpture was displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show, in 2009. What's most impressive is that details like the seats, instruments panel, engine, suspension, and transaxle can all be seen.

This is Luke Jerram's glass sculpture of the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, from his gorgeous Glass Microbiology series, which includes E. coli, SARS, smallpox and HIV.

These transparent glass sculptures were created by the artist, to contemplate the global impact of each disease and to consider how the artificial coloring of scientific imagery affects our understanding of phenomena.

The artist Kohei Nawa, from Osaka, Japan, transforms the body of an elk by covering it with transparent glass and resin beads, transforming our perception of the original creature.

By covering the skin of taxidermy animals with transparent glass spheres, sculptor Kohei Nawa magnifies the underlying surface and distorts the surrounding light to create a pixilated “husk of light.”
The artist Christina Bothwell employs glass, clay, wood, paint and found objects in her revealing sculptures. She includes glass within glass and painting on top of glass. Clay and wood come together to add warmth to many of her creations. Christina is an accomplished artist with many solo and group exhibitions and numerous awards. She was the 2008 Winner of the Virginia A. Groot Foundation Award.

15 Amazing Creatures from Russia's White Sea Shot in Macro

Alexander Semenov takes us into the secret and mysterious world under Russia's White Sea. Alexander is a biologist at the White Sea Biological Station, where he works as chief of the dive team and in the lab. He loves taking macro shots of the almost invisible tiny creatures in the sea that most of us never get to see.

15. Skeleton Shrimp ("come closer my dear")
This little horror may be a very common shrimp in the White Sea but he sure doesn't look friendly! It is actually a skeleton shrimp and doesn't have a shell. The best description of what it is like we found on Wiki: "They resemble an inchworm while "walking", a stick while sitting still and a praying mantis while catching prey." They are so thin they blend in perfectly with swaying sea grasses.

14. Brachiopod

This beautiful brachiopod is a living fossil. It hasn't changed one bit in 4 million years, even though many of its cousins have become extinct. Scientists are not sure why, but most fish and crustaceans don't seem to like the taste of brachiopods and leave them alone. In this amazing photo you can see the "lophophore" inside the shell which filters food for the brachiopod.

13. Nereis Pellagica - Sandworm
Nerei Pellagica is also known as the sandworm and is huge. It can grow up to 40 cm long and be as big around as your thumb. The little growths on its sides are called parapodia and are used rather like gills, for breathing, and to move with – like little feet.

12. Nereis Virens
This monstrous face is nasty! It isn't above trying to give you a bite with those two teeth either if it can't run away. Behind its mouth is an enormous pharynx, which connects the mouth to the esophagus and which can be a 1/4 of the length of his body with two sharp jaws. When it catches prey it can push it out of his mouth at blazing speed, and as the photographer says, "It's not a good show before sleeping or eating," as you can see in the very first image.

11. Sea Slug
This is one of the prettiest sea slugs in the White Sea. The color of its papillas – the colored parts – depends on what it eats. It is one of the most common creatures in the sea.

10. White Sea Amphipoda
This is the head of an unidentified amphipoda. Amphipoda are shell-less crustaceans, and in the White Sea there are 230 species, most of which are only encountered once or twice. Their name means "different footed" because unlike an isopod (see here) their legs are not all the same.

9. Dendrotus Frondosus
This translucent sea slug has a green digestive system which we can readily see. It is extremely rare – and the photographer has only seen them twice – but its golden brown cousin is common (you see one below).
Sea slugs pull in their papilla when disturbed or scared because predators like to feed on them.

8. Tubularia Flower
This looks like a lovely flower but is all animal! It is carnivorous and has poisonous cells to defend itself and to catch prey with. The flowers are tiny, only 3-4 mm in size.

7. Flourescent Scales of Lepidonotus squamatus
The Lepidonotus squamatus have 12 scales, and Alexander Semenov has done an incredible job of catching the fluorescence in them, shooting the photo under UV light with an orange filter. The males are pale when sexually mature because of the sperm within them while the females are green or gray.

6. Sunstar Skin
This is the skin of the common sunstar, one of the largest and fastest sea stars in the world. It will eat anything and even swallow other sunstars whole!

5. Sea Angel
The sea angel (who was part of our 12 Plankton of Christmas story) is starting to hunt for its prey, the sea butterfly. The angels are actually baby sea slugs and have closely matched their metabolism to their prey.

4. Sea Butterfly
The prey of sea angels, this diminutive animal has black wings that are actually lobes of its "feet", which it beats to move through the water. Sea butterflies are about the size of a lentil.

3. Metridium
This isn't a leftover visitor to Woodstock but a sea anemone that has lots of long tentacles. The Metridium always has a central stalk like this one but they are not all as beautiful or bizarre. This one with purple tentacles is rare; normally instead of purple they are orange or yellow.

2. Limapontia
These incredible little animals look like elephant embryos or little bears but are adult Limapontia. Very little is known about them; they are generally brown in color but some are lighter as we see here.

1. iSlug
This sexy little creature has been nicknamed iSlug by the photographer and we can see why. It is another one of the common sea slugs but has brilliant red coloring from its food.
